Pure V10 performance
The Mercury Racing 400R outboard is designed for boaters who demand maximum torque, top-end power and precise high-speed control. It offers more low-end pull, more peak horsepower and a higher rpm range than any outboard in its category. This makes it a perfect match for performance center-console boats and catamarans that routinely run faster than 75 mph.
QC4 breathing and power
A 5.7L V10 powerhead with Quad Cam Four Valve (QC4) technology sits at the heart of the 400R. Double overhead camshafts and four-valve aluminum cylinder heads allow the engine to breathe deeply at all rpm. A proprietary 92 mm throttle body and tuned intake work with the QC4 heads to maximize airflow and power.
The heavy-duty throttle body servo produces instant throttle response. A Mercury Racing fuel pressure sensor maintains precise fueling during acceleration. The wide 6000–6600 rpm WOT range supports strong peak horsepower and offers a broad window for optimising propeller choice on different hull types.
Racing AMS midsection
The exclusive Racing Advanced MidSection (Racing AMS) supports the V10 with tight-tolerance guide plates and stiff engine mounts. This setup stabilises the engine and improves high-speed handling. An optional integrated rear tie-bar bracket offers a strong and lightweight mounting point for precision steering on catamarans and other ultra-high-speed applications. The Racing AMS also isolates the powerhead from the transom to keep operation smooth and quiet.
Gearcase options for every hull
Two gearcase options let you tailor the 400R to your boat. The race-proven Sport Master gearcase is a surface-piercing design for boats capable of more than 85 mph and features low water pickups with a crescent leading edge for maximum efficiency. The Mercury Racing 5.44 HD gearcase is ideal for heavy bay boats and multi-engine performance center-consoles that need a more submerged gearcase and extra stern lift. Both options use a 1.60:1 gear ratio.
Styling, fuel and controls
Customers can choose Phantom Black or Cold Fusion White, each with Mercury Racing graphics and Devil Red Eye trim. A base Phantom Black version is also available without graphics for custom paint projects. Graphics and an application mask are supplied for installation after painting.
All of this performance is delivered on readily available 87-octane (91 RON) fuel. Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) provides smooth shifting and precise throttle response, while a high-capacity 150 amp charging system supports modern electronics and onboard systems.
